a Festival Celebrating Wild Spring Greens

It was a day of celebrating nettles and other wild foods growing on the island. Herbalist Holly Bellebuono gave a talk “For the Love of Nettles” and there were cooking demos by local chefs Gabrille Redner & Zephir Plume, Chris Fischer, Cathy Walthers, and Jan Buhrman.  Sponsored by Slow Food Martha’s Vineyard and Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary.


COOKING DEMOS – to cover food costs,
each demo :   $5 – non-members
$3 – Slow Food and Felix Neck members
Recipes and tastings.
Demos limited to 25 people each; 2 demos per person limit

10 – 10:30 Cooking Demo with Gabrielle Redner of The Terrace restaurant and Zephir  Plume, Vineyard Haven private chef : Green eggs and ham! Nettle dips, dressings and sauces.

10:45  -  11:15 Cooking Demo with Beach Plum’s Chef Chris Fischer :Fresh pasta with wild greens.

11:15 – 11:45 Cooking Demo Cathy Walthers, author of Greens, Glorious Greens, Raising the Salad Bar and other cookbooks : How to use nettles and watercress. Making nettles spanikopita, spring watercress salad.

11:30  – noon. Cooking Demo, Kitchen Porch’s chef/owner Jan Buhrman : Making soups with nettles and watercress.



1 p.m.  “For the Love of Nettles”

We’re pleased to have herbalist Holly Bellebuono. Learn about the medicinal virtues of nettles and ways nettles have been used and appreciated throughout the world.

Holly is a 17th year traditional and certified herbalist, speaker, forager, women’s natural health specialist and owner of Vineyard Herbs Tea and Apothecary.  Her newest book is The Essential Herbal for Natural Health: How to Transform Easy-to-Find Herbs into Healing Remedies for the Whole Family.

10:30 – 11:30 Eat Wild:  Taste Spring with Felix Neck Director Suzan Bellincampi who introduce you to a few spring wild edibles and share identification and preparation tips.

10 and 11 a.m. Growing Nettles Talks – Local forager Kevin Brennan shares growing tips for nettles. Plant sale featuring mini nettle plants!

11:30 – Spring Greens Cooking Challenge: noon Judging of dishes. Prizes awarded.

12 – 1 – Spring Greens Potluck – bring a dish to share and enjoy. See what dishes can be created.

1 p.m. - Keynote talk with Holly Bellebuono – outside at the amphitheatre
